Fly Fishing Newsletter
January 2008

The winter is a good time to check out your equipment for the spring. Time to clean your line and check for cracks or damage. Clean and lube your reel, check your rod for cracks or damage that needs to be sent back to the manufacturer for repair. Now is the time to get your equipment ready. Winter is traditionally the time to check your fly inventory. Look into tying the basics now when the fishing is slow. Look at the streams when the weather is very cold and look for places where steam is coming off the water. These are places where springs are located, make a mental note…in the summer these will be the places where the fish will congregate when the water gets warm.

Now is the time to look into the island for Tarpon and Bonefish, the vacation in the winter to that tropical island can be combined into a great fishing experience

Remember that there is fishing 365 days a year even locally. The holdover fish from the fall stocking have gotten bigger and the lack of fishing pressure makes them readily available. The "closed" season is only a couple of weeks long and is not on all streams. Also remember to update your fishing license, it can be done on line in both Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

Stripers are still around in smaller sizes but should start to pick up again just as trout season starts up again. Try Union Beach for early season.
